Ontario Eastern White cedar trees are more tolerant of wet soils, provide more immediate privacy, and are relatively maintenance-free and since they are native to Ontario they do not need to adjust to Ontario’s weather.

Farm-grown cedar trees are healthier due to their established root systems and ability to adapt to drier conditions whereas swamp cedar trees prefer wetter environments and are most successful in swamps.

Bare-root balls tend to be heavier since their roots are not contained by the pot, so they have more soil room in which to grow, resulting in a healthier, fuller tree. Potted trees will never have a root system as complete and deployed as a bare-root, farm-grown cedar tree. Our cedar trees are farm-grown, bare-root, and do not come in pots.

Ontario Eastern white cedar trees are extremely resilient and can be planted almost anywhere except where they will not get 4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day on sunny days, or areas that are prone to flooding, or close to areas where road salt will be used. Site consultations are not necessary but if you have a concern, a simple picture via email or text to us will suffice.

Cedar trees can be planted year-round (except winter), spring and fall are optimal for planting because they typically offer ample rainfall and reduce the need for manual watering.

Our cedar tree sizes range from 3 to 15 feet. Please see our price chart (located on the Home Page) for the different sizes, prices, and quantities needed per every 10 feet. A general rule of thumb is one tree per every three-quarter foot for tree heights 3-8 and one tree per every one and a quarter foot for tree heights 9-15. Trees planted too close together may stunt their growth due to crowding, while too far apart may cause gaps that will reduce their effectiveness for privacy and windbreak. You have the option to plant them yourself or have us plant them outside of our recommendation, but keep in mind that the conditional cedar tree replacement warranty will not be provided.

There is a $100 delivery fee within the Durham Region, and a delivery fee outside of that area - depending on the location.

Since we are planting individual cedar trees, it will take some time for them to grow into each other and form into a hedge. The taller height trees from 9-15 foot are not only taller but wider so will give you more immediate privacy. The smaller height trees settle in more quickly than the taller ones.

Since cedar trees are shallow, wide-spreading, and opportunistic the roots become deep in well-drained soil, shallow in wet soil, and far-reaching in rockier places, therefore do not pose a risk to foundations or fences. Their roots naturally will grow around any obstructions.

We aim for about 18-24” from a fence. A fence is not a requirement but can be helpful in tying larger height trees from 11-15 feet to the fence until rooted otherwise metal T-bar stakes are necessary. These are to be purchased by the customer and made available to the team on the planting date.

We dig a trench slightly deeper than the height of the root ball and at least twice as wide which allows the roots to spread. Each cedar tree is planted root ball to root ball to ensure a nice tight hedge. We add soil, preferably triple mix topsoil mixed in with the existing soil without compacting. No fertilizer is used. You have the option to plant them yourself, but keep in mind that the conditional cedar tree replacement warranty will not be provided.

We do not use heavy equipment, and the time varies depending on the height of the trees and how many trees are being planted.

We dig fresh cedar trees each morning and if there has been excessive rain at the farm’s location, either on the planting date or previous day, this can compromise the root balls when pulling them out of the ground, as saturated soil can make roots less stable and damage them, potentially leading to root rot and making them harder to remove. This is especially true in larger height trees from 9-15 feet. It is also very difficult and not advisable to plant them in high winds. Please be patient and understanding as we are trying to protect your investment.

Watering thoroughly after planting and during their critical early stages using a soaker hose provides ideal conditions for newly planted cedar trees to establish themselves. The soil should be moist but never saturated. These specific instructions vary seasonally: more frequently in the summer and less in the spring and fall, therefore written post-installation care instructions are provided via email, regardless of whether they are picked up, delivered, or delivered and planted.

They grow about one foot per year in ideal conditions and can reach towering heights of up to 45 feet at maturity but can be easily pruned to your desired size.
